Open Channel Flow Measurement for Wastewater, Sewage and Partially Filled Pipes

Wastewater and sewage flow measurement can be challenging because the liquid conditions are often different from those of clean water.

The flow may contain suspended solids, sludge, air bubbles and other contaminants. In addition, many wastewater pipelines operate as partially filled pipes rather than completely full pipelines.

For these applications, an open channel flow meter or partially filled pipe flow meter may be more suitable than a conventional full-pipe flowmeter.

1. Why Is Wastewater Flow Measurement Difficult?

Wastewater systems can have several challenging conditions:

  • ● Variable water level
  • ● Variable flow velocity
  • ● Suspended solids
  • ● Sludge
  • ● Air bubbles
  • ● Foam
  • ● Turbulence
  • ● Partially filled pipes

These conditions need to be considered when selecting the measurement technology.

2. Can an Ultrasonic Flow Meter Measure Dirty Water?

Yes, depending on the application.

Ultrasonic technology is widely used for wastewater and dirty-water applications. However, the specific measurement principle must be selected according to the application.

For example, Doppler ultrasonic flowmeters are commonly used for liquids containing suspended particles or air bubbles. For open-channel applications, a dedicated flow velocity and level measurement system can be used to calculate the flow rate.

3. Open Channel vs. Partially Filled Pipe

These two applications are related but not identical.

Open ChannelThe liquid flows freely through a channel and has a free surface. Examples include: Wastewater channels, Drainage channels, Irrigation channels.

Partially Filled PipeThe liquid flows through a closed pipe, but the pipe is not completely full. Examples include: Gravity sewage pipelines, Drainage pipelines, Wastewater pipelines.

Both applications require the flow area to be determined according to the actual liquid level.

4. Why Is Liquid Level Important?

In a full pipeline, the pipe cross-sectional area is fixed. In a partially filled pipe, however, the flow area changes as the water level changes.

For example: Low water level → smaller flow area; High water level → larger flow area.

Therefore, measuring water level is an important part of non-full-pipe flow measurement. The flow calculation can then take into account the measured velocity and the actual flow area.

5. Typical Wastewater Applications

Open-channel and partially filled pipe flowmeters can be considered for: Municipal Wastewater, Industrial Wastewater, Sewage Pump Stations, Drainage Systems, Irrigation, and Environmental Monitoring.

6. What About Sludge?

Sludge applications require additional consideration. The liquid may contain a high concentration of suspended solids, which can affect measurement conditions. Important parameters include: Solids concentration, Particle size, Liquid viscosity, Air content, Flow velocity, Channel or pipe condition.

A technical evaluation is recommended before selecting the flowmeter.

7. Can the Flowmeter Measure a Very Low Flow?

Low flow is one of the important considerations in wastewater measurement. When the flow becomes very low: Flow velocity decreases, Water level may become very low, The hydraulic conditions may become less stable.

Therefore, the minimum expected flow and minimum water level should be provided during product selection.

8. What Causes Unstable Wastewater Flow Readings?

Common causes include: Excessive turbulence, Low water level, Excessive air bubbles, Incorrect channel dimensions, and Sensor installation.

9. Why Are Installation Photos Important?

For wastewater flowmeter applications, a photo can often provide information that cannot be described by pipe size alone. A useful photo should show: Upstream section, Downstream section, Proposed sensor location, Channel or pipe dimensions, Nearby pumps or gates, and Water level.

10. Lanry DOF6000 for Open Channel Applications

The Lanry DOF6000 is designed for flow measurement in open channels and partially filled pipes. It can be considered for applications involving: Wastewater, Sewage, Drainage, Industrial wastewater, Irrigation, Open channels, and Gravity pipelines.

For applications involving unusual channel geometry, very low water levels or severe turbulence, Lanry recommends evaluating the site conditions before final selection.

What Information Should You Provide?

For wastewater or open-channel flow measurement, please provide:

  • Liquid: wastewater / sewage / drainage / other
  • Channel type: open channel / partially filled pipe
  • Channel width or pipe diameter
  • Minimum / Normal / Maximum water level
  • Minimum / Normal / Maximum flow
  • Liquid temperature
  • Installation photos

With this information, a suitable measurement solution can be evaluated.
