What Is a Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter and How Does It Work?

A portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is a non-invasive flow measurement instrument designed for temporary flow measurement, field testing, troubleshooting, and flow verification. Unlike an inline flow meter, it does not need to be installed inside the pipeline. Instead, ultrasonic transducers are clamped onto the outside of the pipe to measure the flow through the pipe wall.

This design allows engineers and maintenance technicians to measure flow without cutting the pipe, draining the pipeline, or interrupting the process. A single portable flow meter can also be moved between different pipelines, making it particularly useful when flow measurement is required at multiple locations.

How Does a Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter Work?

Most portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters for clean liquids use the transit-time ultrasonic principle.

Two ultrasonic transducers are installed on the outside of the pipe. One transducer sends an ultrasonic signal downstream, while the other sends a signal upstream. Because the liquid is flowing, the ultrasonic signal traveling in the same direction as the liquid moves slightly faster than the signal traveling against the flow.

The flow meter measures the difference between these two transit times. This difference is then used to calculate the average flow velocity.

Once the flow velocity is determined, the instrument calculates the volumetric flow rate based on the internal cross-sectional area of the pipe.

The basic measurement process can therefore be summarized as:

Ultrasonic transmission → Transit-time difference → Flow velocity → Flow rate

Because the sensors remain outside the pipe, the measurement is completely non-invasive.

What Are the Advantages of a Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter?

1. Non-Invasive Measurement

There is no need to drill into the pipe or insert a probe into the liquid.

2. No Process Interruption

There is no need to stop the pump, drain the pipe, or shut down the production process.

3. Easy to Move Between Pipelines

A portable instrument can be carried from one measurement point to another.

4. Useful for Temporary Measurement

Suitable for projects lasting several hours, days, or during specific testing.

5. Useful for Flow Meter Verification

Acts as a convenient reference instrument for checking existing meter readings.

6. No Additional Pressure Loss

No sensor body protruding into the flow path means no flow obstruction.

Application Cases

Application Case 1: Checking Pump Performance

Used to verify actual flow rates against design values on discharge pipes to diagnose pump or valve issues.

Application Case 2: Verifying an Existing Flow Meter

Used as a comparison tool to investigate inaccuracies in installed electromagnetic flow meters.

Application Case 3: Measuring Flow on Multiple Pipelines

Cost-effective solution for facilities requiring periodic data collection across multiple points without permanent installations.

Technical Considerations

What Liquids Can Be Measured? Generally best for clean liquids. For liquids with particles/bubbles, a Doppler ultrasonic flow meter is recommended.

Can It Measure Plastic Pipes? Yes, including PVC, HDPE, and PE, though acoustic characteristics require precise setup.

What Pipe Conditions Are Required? Pipes should be full of liquid. Recommended installation: 10D upstream and 5D downstream of straight pipe.

FAQ About Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meters

1. Can it be installed without stopping the pipeline? Yes, it is non-invasive.

2. Does the pipe need to be cut? No.

3. Can one meter measure different pipe sizes? Yes, depending on the sensor and model configuration.

4. Can it measure hot water? Yes, provided temperature ratings are respected.

5. Can it measure a pipe with insulation? Usually requires removing insulation at the measurement point.
